Diwali in Houston - 10 Diwali events to Celebrate with your family

Houston will be celebrating this year with light displays, ceremonies, and meals. Diwali in Houston officially begins at the end of October. One of India’s most significant holidays, the celebration honors the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

The five-day celebration is celebrated with lights, prayers, fireworks, get-togethers with relatives, and feasts. Diwali is a festival celebrated every year that spans the Moon’s orbit of the Earth and is based on the Hindu lunar calendar. After the pandemic cancellations of 2020, in-person festivities made a significant comeback in 2021, and this year promises to be even greater.

The Diwali ceremony is observed in the temple by lighting hundreds of candles in different spots throughout the temple and presenting a special Prasadam to the Deity. A special Candle-light Aarti is performed and thousands of Dipa are offered to the Deities as part of the celebration of Dipawali, which is also known as Govardhan Puja and the Annakut Ceremony.

The Diwali Gift by Shweta Chopra and Shuchi Mehta is a special Diwali reading. This delightful story of three inquisitive monkeys honours Diwali by highlighting Indian culture and the customs and festivities associated with this festival.

The temple will host a variety of Diwali celebrations, including Sandhya Arti, Hanuman Pujan, Maha Arti & Fireworks, and the Festival of Inspiration. There will be a spectacular celebration of Chopda Pujan and Diwali. Enjoy Annakut Darshan as you ring in the Hindu New Year. You are graciously invited by the temple to visit the Annakut with your family.

At Willow Ridge High School, Reuniting Indians in Cultural and Social Activities (RIICAS) will hold Diwali Masti. A fashion show, a festival outfit competition, and dance performances will all be included in the complete celebration.   And if you get hungry, don’t worry. Dinner will be an authentic Indian feast provided by the event organizers.

In Hindu culture, Diwali is the equivalent of Christmas. Across this special WonderWeek, join in as they celebrate Diwali and engage in a number of culturally diverse activities and crafts throughout the museum. There are many different activities, such as Mandala Designs, Paper Diyas, Rangoli Revelry, and “Sparkler” Fireworks.
